Hi Friends!

So after years of working in the Bridal industry, I have seen that there are certain mistakes that bride after bride makes when she’s shopping for her wedding dresses. While there is a wealth of information out there on this topic, I still see people making these mistakes, so I thought I’d give you an insiders look at how you can make this process more smooth an simple, and most importantly, as stress free.

So without further ado, here are the most common mistakes I see brides making, and how to avoid being her!

1 leaving wedding dress shopping to the last minute

Now friends, what you need to realise is that last minute in wedding dress world is anything less than 4 months before your wedding. The reason for this is that imported dresses have a lead time of 4 to 6 months between ordering and your dress being delivered, and then you will still need time for alterations (and trust me, 99% of brides will need alterations).
Then when it comes to designers, we get booked up quite far in advance, and since a wedding dress is such a labor intensive process, rush orders may not be possible,
You also need to remember that you may need to visit multiple shops before you find your perfect dress and this too takes time.

So when should I start wedding dress shopping?

Start wedding dress shopping 1 year, minimum 9 months before your wedding day to leave you with plenty of time and all your options available to you.

2 - Getting their heart set on a specific dress they see online

Now friends, please don’t get me wrong. I am in no way discouraging you from looking for dresses online before you start shopping, in fact I greatly encourage it! What I am saying, is that you have to bare in mind that those dresses are being modelled by a 6 foot tall stick figure with extraordinarily perky boobs. Of course the dress looks amazing on her! She could put a flippin black bag on and make it look sexy! While I totally understand how we can fall in love with a style, please be open to the possibility that that exact dress may not be the best style for your body type.

My advice?

My advice is to track the dress down if possible and try it on, if it doesn’t suit you, then try on some others of a similar style or feel, and the result of this is either going to be that you fall in love with a dress that is similar in feel but not cut, OR you can take your design to a designer like me who will advise you how to use said dress as inspiration but make it in a cut that will bring out the best aspects of your figure.

I'm going to leave it here for today, stay tuned for the next installment!

Hi Friends!
Here’s one for all of you brides to be who are wondering just where to start when it comes to shopping for your dream wedding dress. To keep it simple, here are my top three essentials for any good wedding dress shopping experience.

1 - Wear or bring well fitting underwear and/or shapewear

Recently I went to visit the team at Inner Secrets, a specialist underwear, swimwear, and lingerie company who import the very best brands and really know their stuff when it comes to bridal underwear. The reason for this is that I am acutely aware that when my clients wear the correct underwear, it both boosts their confidence levels, and helps me to create a seamless couture finish.

Upon meeting the team, they told me that they actually refer to garments such as Spanx as “foundation wear”, and I thought this was really very apt. What they are saying, is that the underwear or shapewear that you choose, lays the foundation for the fit of the dress that I make. If this foundation is good, we can create a spectacular result. If your underwear is badly fitted, however, I will not to be able to create a couture finish, no matter what I do.

The style of foundation wear you wear on your wedding day will depend on the type of shaping and support you need, as well as the style of your wedding dress, but for your best experience at your first fitting, I advise you to bring a form of shapewear such as Spanx, a very well fitted bra, and panties that do not cut into you. With this in your arsenal, you will be able to enjoy the experience of trying on various styles and be able to see clearly how they suit your figure.

2 Make a bit of effort on your hair and make-up

This is something that a surprising number of brides to be do not think about. Even though the dress fitting is a completely casual affair, you’re going to enjoy it far more if you like what you see in the mirror. Since this is an exercise in playing dress up for your big day, it will help if you’ve made a bit of an effort to straighten or wash your hair and put on a lick of mascara. This will boost your confidence levels and help you to envision how you would really look on your big day.

3 A trusted friend or family member

In my experience, one or two of your besties is great to offer support and guidance in this important stage of your bridal experience. I ask that you don’t bring a huge entourage who will overwhelm and confuse you, but one or two people who know you well and can share in your vision is really helpful. Always be careful to select those who will offer honest but kind feedback and leave behind anyone who may be overly critical or negative.

I could go on forever with a laundry list of things, but in my opinion, these three are the most important to ensure that you have a fun and productive fitting experience.

For inquiries and any further questions, please feel free to contact me and I will help in whatever way I can.

For more advice on your foundation wear, why not pop into an Inner Secrets store and let the team of experts help you to achieve your perfect foundation!

I get asked all the time, how much does a wedding dress in South Africa in 2018 cost, and while it is a bit of a case of, how long is a piece of string, it is a question that I can help to explain to you. So, here goes!

Basically, a traditional wedding dress can cost from R12 000 for an entry level wedding dress to over R175 000, with your average being between R16 000 to R30 000.

But how do I know what MY dream wedding dress will cost?

Let me help to break this down for you, please note that this is no official pricing, it’s simply based on my own industry knowledge so please don’t use this to argue with your chosen designer if he or she quotes you outside of these guidelines. Each designer has their own pricing and costs unique to them.

A R12 000 to R18 000 wedding dress

This price range will get you a fairly basic wedding dress with some lace either on the top or hem but not likely a full lace dress. You’re looking at a wedding dress that has a lace bodice and a plain skirt without any hem detail. Note that full tulle skirts will fall into the upper category generally. Dresses with drapery will fall into this category.

R18 000 to R22 000 wedding dress

This will be a wedding dress with more detail but still generally not a full beaded lace dress. Unbeaded lace dresses that are imported might fall in the upper part of this category but if you’re wanting to get a dress custom made, full lace is unlikely to be possible in this price range. You can get an illusion bodice dress with some lace on the skirt.

R22 000 to R30 000 wedding dress

This is the full lace dress section. Again the price is always going to depend on the expense of the lace. If you want the dress to be all beaded lace from head to toe you’re looking at closer to R30 000 and upwards.
Dresses that have a lace edging at the bottom will tend to be at the upper end of this category, and if it have a very long train or a very full ball gown skirt with lace trim on the hem you can be looking at R30 000 and up.

R30 000 plus wedding dress

This is the designer dress category and you’re usually looking at a a detailed full lace dress. That being said, depending on the designer, their simpler dresses could start at this price range.

International big label designer wedding dresses

Here in South Africa we do not have access to most of the big label designers, but here are some examples of the big names and what you can expect to pay for them

Inbal Dror - averaging R175 000 for a dress

Berta bridal - R90 000 to R110 000 and up

Bo and Luca - R40 000 to R60 000

Hayley Paige - R50 000 to R90 000

When I looked at dresses a few years ago they were much cheaper!
Why has the price of wedding dresses gone up so much in the last few years?

The price of wedding dresses has escalated vastly in the last 3 years or so and this is mainly due to 2 factors. The first is the obvious impact of our weakened rand. In terms of imported dresses, this has meant that the boutiques have suddenly had to pay far more (they generally have to purchase in USD) for the dresses and this is then reflected to the customer.

The second factor for designers such as myself, is that the prices of fabrics have literally doubled, or more, in the last 18 months. (Rose sobs quietly at her laptop).

The last major factor, is that our government has drastically increased import duties from China to be 45% for wedding dresses. And yes friends, imported dresses including well renowned European brands are all manufactured in China.

So friends, I hope that this has helped you in getting an idea of what a wedding dress costs in South Africa. If you have any further questions, please feel free to mail me and I will assist you in any way I can.

HI Friends!

I have been busy with my latest bridal range and the starting of wedding season. aside from that, I've been privileged to be involved in a number of incredible styled shoots of late. Recently Mary-Ann Wiggill approached me about a styled shoot she was planning in the stunning fields of Canettevallei Lavender Farm. I jumped at the opportunity to be involved, and am so glad I did!

Mary-Ann is an artist and has created a business of offering the luxury service of having her at your wedding to paint a personal impressionist styled bridal painting of the bridal couple. While you celebrate your wedding day, Mary-Ann will sit and render a true to life painting to capture your special moment. Can you imagine anything more special? What an amazing idea! She wanted to demonstrate this by organizing this styled shoot. The models used were to be the lovely couple Anne McNally and Jeremy Osbourne and they were made up by the make-up artist Madeleine Conradie

The team, including Moondrops Flowers on flowers, Blooming Wonderful on stationary, and Houthuis Event Furniture for the furniture hire, created an exquisitely romantic mock wedding set up that is fit for any modern day dreamer. Mary-Ann styled the theme around Monet, using the soft colour palette typical to the artist and the flowers and decor was arranged accordingly.

I provided a soft, flowing dress with a V neck illusion bodice and long sleeves with beaded lace applique'. The gown is perfect for the modern day romantic bride who wants an easy wearing, ethereal look. The open back add a sexy touch and the wedding dress from my up coming 2018 bridal range looked gorgeous on Anne.
