I friends!
Today I wanted to talk about the most suitable wedding dress styles if you’re getting married in Cape Town.

Cape Town is best known for its beautiful, hot sunny summers and unmatched natural surroundings. For this reason, people flood here from around the world to get married. If you’re saying your I-do’s in Cape Town, here are my top 3 wedding themes and wedding dress advice to match:

Cape Town beach weddings

World renowned for our spectacular coastlines and blue flag beaches. Many brides, both locally and from abroad choose to wed on our beaches and my favorite beach wedding venues are:

Die Strandlooper

strandloper

If you’re going for a laid back vibe, Die Strandloper is the perfect venue. The wedding is held on the beach restaurant and a meal of freshly caught fish will be served. For a genuine South African experience, sun on your back and feet in the sand, this is for you!

Wedding dress to match:

For this style wedding, laid back bohemian wedding dresses are best. You will be walking on the sand, so keep your feet bare or with toe sandals. I suggest an easy to wear boho gown that’s simple and comfortable. Look at my Islay Rose Bohemian wedding dress collection.

Strandkombuis

The Strandkombuis is a more upmarket venue, offering the dreaminess of getting married on the famous sixteen mile beach, with all the creature comforts of a traditional wedding. You will have a Bedouin tent to protect you from the wind and world class catering and decor services.

Wedding dress to match:

For this venue I would advise high end bohemian wedding dresses. With the night being lit by fairy lights, a bit of sparkle and glamor can be donned, but I still advise choosing a style that’s easy to wear and has a soft, flowing aesthetic. Again this is not a stiletto friendly venue, so keeping your styling on the boho side is best. Think beautiful lace, beadwork and chiffon. Look at my Islay Rose custom made options for this.

Cape Town Wine farm weddings

Cape Town weddings are most typified by the wine farm wedding. We have such a vast array of world class venues that it’s hard do select just a few, but for the most luxurious wine farms, look at Ashanti, the Conservatory, Molenvliet, Groot Constantia, Babylonstoren and Grande Provence. These venues will give you the very best of the Western Cape natural beauty as well as the most unmatched catering and decor.

These wine farms have a great deal of history and some are quite opulent. For this reason you can choose a wedding dress that is formal and either traditional or vintage inspired. I would advise choosing a wedding dress that has a bit of wow factor. For all wine farm weddings, a traditional wedding dress would suit well. Bare in mind that you will likely go out among the vineyards for your photographs, so unmanageable trains are not advisable. Look either at my Molteno Collections, or at having your dream dress custom made

Luxury hotel weddings

Cape Town is home to some of the top hotels for weddings in the world. The top of which I would say are the famous Mount Nelson, providing a vintage, historic feel. The Table bay Hotel for opulence unmatched and 12 Appostles for umnatched views and service.

Wedding dress that suits

If you’ve chosen one of these breathtaking venues then I suggest your wedding dress be as memorable as your venue.Go for a high-glam wedding dress that suits your personal styling. If you’re a clean-cut modern bride, then own that style, but be sure that it’s as formal as your choice of venue. I advise a custom made wedding dress to fulfil all your dreams and needs.

I hope this helped all those planning their dream wedding in Cape Town, have fun friends and remember, your wedding is about YOU, so be true to your style and don’t let others pressure you into conforming!

Rushka came to me in August 2016 looking for a designer to help her to create her dream wedding dress. As a creative herself, she had a clear idea of the aesthetic she was going for and felt that my soft, bohemian design style was in line with that.

2016 11 14 08.39.39 2

Ruschka had collected a few images of wedding dresses she liked, and also brought me a few dresses of her own that she liked. I love it when my clients do that as it gives me a clear idea of the bridal they like, and the clothes they bring of their own can show me and them exactly what looks good on their figure.

Ruschka was going for a bohemian styled wedding dress. This typically alludes to the bridal design being understated, elegant, easy to wear, light and flowing. The wedding venue was to be the center of Cape Town and they were going to do the couples shoot on the streets of the CBD, the theme would therefore be that of modern boho.

After looking at all of Ruschka's design inspiration, we settled on a dress with an unstructured bodice, with a scoop neck and low scoop back. The front of the bodice was to be lined with satin and covered by delicate Chantilly lace. The back would be made using only the lace against skin and I would cut delicate cap sleeves from the trademark Chantilly edging.

The skirt would be made from a double layer of featherweight silk chiffon and finally I would make a little belt from raw silk. The back of the lace would be fastened with a fine row of silk covered buttons.

The style suited Ruschka’s petite frame perfectly and we chose an off white which complimented her complexion.

After a trip to the fabric store and a few fittings, the dress came together perfectly and the result was nothing short of stunning!

From our brides mouth :  The dress looked amazing and I felt incredible and so comfortable in it the whole day. Thanks again Rose!

Soetkin's dream wedding dress

I met Soetkin at the wedding expo in Franschhoek this year and we immediately got on with one another. She said my whimsical design style resonated with her and she was looking to have her wedding dress made.
14705614 1188039107950414 7410539641261529663 n

Soetkin was looking for a wedding dress that was soft and feminine, but also elegant and classy. When she came to my studio for a consultation we tried on a number of my dresses and assesed what dress shapes looked best on her and what styles she likes.

She wanted a dress that was not strapless, but had sleeves or lace straps. We settled on a corseted dress with lace appliqué' detail that would be feathered down onto an A-line tulle skirt. I would make lacy straps to create a slight cap sleeve.

We went fabric shopping together and Soetkin chose a stunning embroidered, beaded lace in a pearly cream colour and soft cream satin and Italian tulle. Perfect for our design!

As the fittings progressed, we decided that the lacy straps weren't really working, but instead an off-the-shoulder look suited her better.

I finished Soetkin's bridal look off with a plain cream veil which was perfectly romantic and classic.

Shopping for your ideal wedding dress is no small task and many brides find it completely overwhelming. For this reason, I thought I would give you a few tips to bare in mind before setting out on your trip.

Don't over book your day

While I always advise that my brides try on a number of different wedding dresses of differing styles and shapes, I wouldn't advise you try to do so all in one day. Book appointments with at least three bridal shops and try on a wide selection of dresses, but don't go to more than two or three shops in one day. The reason for this is that it can be tiring and you will start to feel overwhelmed and over saturated with choices. The result is that you won't remember what you tried on.

Pick a quiet time

If possible it's better to shop for your wedding dress during the week. This will allow for plenty of time as wedding shops are generally tightly booked on Saturdays.

Be careful of who to bring with you

I wouldn't advise bringing too many people with you to your bridal fitting. Bring one or two people who's opinions you value. If you bring too many people their opinions may confuse you and you will struggle to get your own opinion heard.

Keep an open mind

Keeping an open mind when it comes to styles and shapes of wedding dresses is very important. More often than not my clients are surprised by what dresses look good on them and the style they thought they wanted actually doesn't flatter. Wedding dresses are constructed differently from normal dresses and they have structure that other dresses don't. This means that a shape that usually doesn't work for you, may be the right one for your wedding dress.

Decide on a wedding dress style

Before you go shopping decide on the style of wedding you are going to have. Are you planning an informal beach wedding, or a glamorous do on a wine farm? Think about the time of day you plan the wedding to be. If it's an evening wedding then a more formal bridal gown will suit, while if it's a morning wedding then a more informal style will be better suited.

which white

Which white do you go with? I rarely recommend going with pure white as this tends to wash out all but the darkest of skin tones. Off-white to cream colours are usually better suited. Don't dismiss the gentle colour times that are in vogue at the moment either. Champagnes, blushes and even pale blue hues can be incredibly beautiful and may suit your skin tone better.

Time is ticking

Finally, I would advise that you start this process at least 6 months before your wedding. This is because if you want to order an imported dress then it takes 3 to 4 months to get to South Africa. It's also to allow for the time to explore custom made options. My clients usually come to me after trying on a number of dresses but not having managed to find all that they want in a single dress. We then design the gown with elements of different dresses to obtain everything they want. The custom made process should allow for 3 months ideally so that it can be done in a relaxed manor and there is lots of time for fittings.
